Lessons Learned from Tyler Perry to Hone Your Creativity and Create Generational Wealth

Tips to Scale Your Kingdom Business

As a Christian business coach for women entrepreneurs, my heart is to help entrepreneurs turn the idea of building generational wealth into a tangible reality. I love digging deep into the stories of those who have gone before us and built successful kingdom enterprises in a way that is authentic to them.

These entrepreneurial leaders are stepping into their unique gifts; they’re stepping into their unique brilliance; and they’re doing it God’s way. By diving into their stories, we can uncover authentic strategies to apply in our own entrepreneurial journeys.

As I continue my journey to dig deep into the C.O.D.E.S., I had to take a look at one of my favorite virtual mentors in the world that has really helped me to build out my business from a place of authenticity. This person is one of the most successful entrepreneurs of our time, and very near and dear to my heart. So y’all get ready to go deep as we learn lessons from the one and only Tyler Perry. Be sure to take notes on how he has honed his creativity to create generational wealth by tapping into the C.O.D.E.S.

Generational wealth is something different for each one of us, but we have a saying around here:

That generational wisdom starts by standing on the foundational principles and wisdom of the Bible.

But, before I dive into that, I have to share another story…

From pressure to purpose is about us walking out of that place where we’re working for God, which is a place of pressure. In this place, we’re so busy with all the distractions and all of the worldly concerns that we’re not working from God.

Around here, we believe that working from God is working in FLOW with God, being connected to God as the Divine.

Y’all know I love the scripture in Luke which talks about the story of Mary and Martha. Martha was distracted with all the preparations that had to be made to receive guests.

Martha found herself in a place where she was so distracted with doing all the things that she ended up getting upset with her sister. When she approached Jesus, she’s like, “Lord, you’re not upset with her? You’re not upset that she’s not doing the work and I’m in here working by myself? Come tell her to help me.”

Jesus’ response to her was. “You are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better and it will not be taken from her.”

I want to really hone in on the part where he talks about Martha being distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. When we look at that, Martha was operating from a spirit of tradition.

She was operating from what she was traditionally expected to do to prepare for someone coming into your home.

One sister {Martha} was in pressure – working for God and distracted by all the things; and one sister {Mary} was coming from God. She was sitting at the feet of God and really allowing Him to build her up.

How many of us have been building our businesses from tradition?

Those walls of tradition are really hindering us from building a true relationship with Christ. If we really want to build true and lasting success – generational wealth – we’ve got to get to a place where we are really flowing from him. In order for us to truly flow from him, we have to break down those walls of tradition.

I want to encourage you to move from pressure into purpose and make that exchange from distraction and busyness to a true relationship with Christ. By doing so, we open ourselves up to a deeper connection with God and the limitless possibilities He has in store for us.

But before you do, let’s get into those lessons I learned  from the one and only, Tyler Perry, that have helped me operate my business with authenticity and purpose!

Lesson 1: Stepping into Your Unique Brilliance through Focused Creativity

Tyler Perry has been significant along my journey. His success lies in his ability to embrace his unique gifts and step into his own brilliance. When Tyler Perry began his entrepreneurial journey, he created a play. Originally, his intention behind the play was to make enough money to take care of his family.

In his inaugural address to the graduating students of Tuskegee University, he said, “My entire intention changed in 1998. It was no longer about making enough money to take care of anybody. It became about what it {the play} did for the people who saw it, who saw themselves {in it}. And everything in my life shifted after that. I was still doing the same show. I was still doing the same things, but because my intention changed, my purpose in what I was doing this for had changed.”

I really love that quote from Tyler Perry because as Christian entrepreneurs, many of us have found ourselves in that place where we are trying to really understand what our purpose is and how to tap into our creativity. Many of us have a lot of creative ideas but don’t know what to focus on first.

After so many years of being told ‘no’ and having little or no support, he began to question if all of his hard work would pay off. Then, he started to receive letters from people who had connected with the characters in his plays and it was then that he knew he was onto something! That’s when his intentions changed and he got focused – on the one play…not plays, but just one play that he produced year after year until it started to take off.

Have you been at a crossroads in your business where you felt like giving up? Like your output is not equaling your input?

The Power of Narrow Focus and Intention

Just like Tyler Perry, when we hone in on our creativity with a narrow focus, that’s when our intentions change. That’s when we begin to see the gifts God has given us and how we are supposed to use them to serve others.

When we can do that type of deep work, it moves our intentions from being about us and turns it into a question of how is this going to truly benefit my audience?

The Bible tells us that the Lord gives us gifts to build up one another. When Tyler Perry started to realize his purpose of using his gifts of creativity, writing, and healing others through laughter, that’s when his intentions shifted and he began to serve others and build them up. When he did that, he didn’t have to worry about money anymore. He wasn’t chasing the dollar anymore. In fact, people started to come to him! He was doing the same play, but it just took off.

As Christian entrepreneurs, we too must identify and hone in on our individual strengths, knowing that God has equipped us for specific purposes in the business world. By embracing our unique gifts, we can create powerful, authentic businesses that align with God’s plan for our lives.

Lesson 2: The Power of a Solid Infrastructure (Operations)

When we think about the operations of what Tyler Perry has built, I want to focus on the beginning. His operations were rooted on building up his play, not his plays. He said his play. His business model was surrounding his ONE play. When we think about operations, that’s the infrastructure that we create to elevate our business into the next level. The infrastructure he created was built around his one play. He put all of his time, energy, and dollars into making his play successful.

So when we think about our operations, I want you to understand that building out the infrastructure of your business is about the commitment over time, and focusing on the one thing. By focusing on that one idea, concept, product, or service and shifting our intentions to serve others, we can make a significant impact for the Kingdom. Tyler Perry emphasizes the importance of a solid foundation, comparing it to the foundation of a building that can carry its weight. Similarly, in our businesses, we must build a strong infrastructure to support our dreams and withstand the changing seasons. This requires commitment, simplifying processes, and making decisions that align with our long-term goals.

Doing It God’s Way

In every interview, Tyler Perry attributes his success to the grace of God and emphasizes the importance of holding a dominion mindset. He talks about having faith by planting seeds, working hard, and believing in their growth.

Tyler Perry’s journey of building a billion-dollar enterprise from humble beginnings teaches us valuable lessons on unlocking generational wealth through the C.O.D.E.S. of creativity, operations, having a dominion mindset, creating expansion, and scaling your business. By aligning our intentions with serving others, focusing on a single idea, building a solid infrastructure, and maintaining faith, we can achieve that next level success we seek. The key lies in unlocking our God-given gifts, harnessing our creativity, and staying committed to our purpose.

Together, let’s build authentic, purpose-driven businesses that leave a lasting legacy by stepping into our unique gifts, doing business God’s way, and breaking free from the constraints of tradition!
